What’s Hot on Your Phone Right Now
Every day I see my friends swiping through a handful of apps that keep them glued to their screens. In 2024 those apps have settled into clear rankings: the top ten are not just popular, they’re shaping how we play on the go. Below you’ll find the concrete details—download numbers, average session length, and the unique feature that sets each one apart.
1. Genshin Impact – The Free‑to‑Play RPG that Keeps Growing
Since its UK launch in March 2024, Genshin Impact has crossed 5 million downloads on iOS alone. Players spend an average of 35 minutes per session, and the new “Event Quest” drops a fresh storyline every week. The biggest draw is the cross‑platform sync; a PC player can pick up where they left off on their phone without any lag.
2. PUBG Mobile – Battle‑Royale Still Dominant
PUBG Mobile’s UK player base hit 3.2 million active users last quarter. The game’s “Quick Match” mode now loads in under 10 seconds, a 20% improvement from 2023. However, the high data usage—about 150 MB per hour—can be a problem for users on limited plans.
3. Roblox – A Platform, Not Just a Game
Roblox’s 2024 update introduced “Creator Studio Lite,” allowing users to build and monetize games in just 15 minutes. The app now boasts 4.5 million daily active users in the UK, and the average time spent per day is 45 minutes. The learning curve is steep for new creators, but the community support forums are surprisingly helpful.
4. Pokémon GO – Augmented Reality Still Works
Pokémon GO celebrated its 10th anniversary with a UK‑exclusive “Legendary Hunt” event, drawing 2.3 million participants. The new “Field Guide” feature lets players scan real‑world locations to find hidden Pokémon, increasing in‑app purchases by 12% during the event. The downside? The app consumes GPS data constantly, which drains battery quickly.
5. Minecraft – Classic Block‑Building Gets a Mobile Boost
With 1.8 million downloads in the UK this year, Minecraft’s “Pocket Edition” now supports cross‑play with the console version. Players can spend up to 2 hours in creative mode without any ads. The only hiccup is the limited multiplayer slots on older devices, which can cause lag.
6. Call of Duty: Mobile – FPS on the Go
Call of Duty: Mobile topped the UK charts with 4 million downloads and an average session of 28 minutes. The new “Clan Wars” mode lets squads of up to 10 compete in 10‑minute matches. The game’s free‑to‑play model is generous, but the optional micro‑transactions for cosmetic items can add up quickly.
7. Among Us – The Social Deduction Game That Still Thrives
Among Us reached 2.6 million UK downloads in 2024. The “Crewmate Survival” update added a new map and a “Ghost Mode” that lets eliminated players influence the game subtly. Sessions average 15 minutes, making it perfect for quick play during commutes. However, the in‑app chat can be spammy if you’re in a large group.
8. Candy Crush Saga – Puzzle Play Never Gets Old
Candy Crush Saga’s UK user base grew by 8% last quarter, reaching 3.1 million active users. The new “Rainbow Rush” level series pushes players to solve 10 puzzles in 10 minutes, keeping the gameplay fresh. The main drawback is the daily login streaks, which can feel pressured if you miss a day.
10. Subway Surfers – Endless Runner with a Twist
Subway Surfers crossed 4 million UK downloads this year, thanks to the new “City Quest” mode that adds a narrative element. Players average 20 minutes per session, and the game’s ad‑free option costs £2.99. The only limitation is that the free version is heavily ad‑supported, which can interrupt the flow.
